Back by popular demand! You may remember Mr. Matthew from PAF’s 2018Spring Seminar in Tallahassee… Sidney Lewis Matthew is a solo trial lawyer, author and filmmaker. This is Mr. Matthew's 40th year practicing law in Tallahassee Florida. In his formative years, Matthew handled civil rights cases. His first trial was second chair with noted civil rights lawyer Toby Simon in the landmark decision by Jacksonville District Judge Charles R. Scott placing the entire Florida prison system under federal court jurisdiction which lasted 20 years. Since that time, Matthew has primarily handled catastrophic Plaintiff civil damages cases in Florida and surrounding states. He was appointed by Eastern Virginia District Judge Robert R. Merhige as co-lead Plaintiffs' counsel in the $4 Billion Dalkon Shield bankruptcy class-action settlement cases in 1984. Matthew was recognized in 1999 with The Florida Bar "Pro Bono" Service Award. In 2000 and 2016 Matthew was elected president of the Tallahassee Chapter of the American Board of Trial Advocates (ABOTA). He currently serves on the Executive Committee for the 8,000 trial lawyers in the Trial Lawyers Section of the Florida Bar. His areas of practice include General Civil Litigation; Accidental Death, Career Service; Products Liability; Medical Malpractice; and Torts. Mr. Matthew attended the University of Tennessee and the University of South Florida completing his BA in 1972 in Psychology and Economics and received his JD from Florida State University School of Law in 1974. Mr. Matthew is married with three children, four grandchildren and one great grandchild. Mr. Matthew’s interests and activities include people, travel, history, creative writing, book publishing, film production, cuisine and golf.
