Topic:   Developments with our new Friendship City of Busseto, Italy
Description:

Speakers: Maestro Victor DeRenzi & Richard Russell
Executive Director of the Sarasota Opera

Come and hear all about the launch of our newest Sister City relationship beginning with a "Friendship City" status with the birthplace of famed Italian Composer, Giuseppe Verdi of Busseto, Italy.

Just beyond Parma, Busseto is located in the characteristic lowlands between the Ducal city and the great river Po.  Here is where Maestro Giuseppe Verdi was born and where he fueled his talent, Busseto and le Roncole are a vital part of an extraordinary journey dedicated to lovers of art, culture, music, history and the countryside as well as of top quality food and wine products.

Along the provincial road which leads from le Roncole, a small village a short distance from Busseto, to Soragna, lies the farmlands and family residence of Giuseppe Verdi. Nearby is the Church of St. Michael Archangel where Verdi was baptized, and where the organ that Verdi learned to play as a young boy guided by the local priest, Pietro Baistrocchi still stands.

Sarasota Sister Cities will be honoring Maestro Victor DeRenzi at the March 29, 2020 One World Award event. The Maestro has the honor and distinction of being the only conductor in the world that has successfully performed the entire canon of Verdi’s works (Verdi Cycle) with the Sarasota Opera and this year, the Maestro celebrates 50 years of work as a musical conductor.

Maestro DeRenzi was made a Knight of the Order of the Star of Italy – “Cavaliere dell’ordine della stella d’Italia,” in 2015 by the Italian Republic for his work in bringing Italian culture beyond the borders of Italy.
