Jim Patterson, Assemblymember
"Gavin’s Law"
"Elementary school vice-principal Gavin Gladding was tragically killed by a suspected DUI hit-and-run on September 18, 2018. He left behind his wife Susan and two children. Susan, along with Gavin’s parents, Gary & Rita Gladding, and his sister, Gabrielle Ruby, decided to fight back against an unjust law that released the perpetrator of the crime after only a year in prison. Assemblymember Patterson, Susan and the Gladdings successfully passed “Gavin’s Law” in the spring of 2020 in the State Assembly, only to have the bill die in the State Senate Public Safety Committee with a deadlocked vote.
Assemblymember Patterson will provide an update on the legislation which would close a loophole that allows drunk drivers who leave the scene of a fatal accident to avoid the 15-year maximum sentence for a felony DUI conviction."
